What is Tithi?

A Tithi is a lunar day: the time it takes the Moon to gain 12 degrees on the Sun. There are 30 in a lunar month, 15 in the waxing half (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning half (Krishna Paksha).

The name

English: "Lunar day"Tamil: திதி (Thithi)Hindi: तिथि (Tithi)

Why it matters

Most festivals, fasts and ceremonies follow the Tithi in force at local sunrise or at a particular time of day. A Tithi can last from about 19 to 26 hours, so it doesn't line up with calendar days.
