Find your Moon sign (Rashi) and birth star

Your Moon sign (Rashi) is the sign of the zodiac the Moon was in when you were born. Indian astrology uses it for daily predictions, Sade Sati and Chandrashtama. Enter your birth details below to find it, along with your Nakshatra (birth star).

It's often different from the "star sign" in Western horoscopes, which is based on the Sun.

Your birth details

The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so the date alone is usually enough. Add the time if you can; we'll tell you if it matters.

Questions people ask

What is my Moon sign?

Your Moon sign, or Rashi, is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Indian (Vedic) astrology uses it as the starting point for daily, monthly and yearly predictions.

Why is my Moon sign different from my star sign?

Western star signs are based on the Sun and a season-based zodiac. Indian astrology uses the Moon and a star-based (sidereal) zodiac, which is about 24 degrees behind. So your Rashi often differs from the sign you know.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Usually not. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so most people get a certain answer from their date and place alone. If you were born near a sign change, we tell you and ask for the time.

What is a Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, or birth stars. Your Nakshatra is the one the Moon was in at your birth. Many families use it for naming, birthdays and matching.

Is this the same as the Rashi on my horoscope?

It should be, as both use the sidereal zodiac. Small differences can come from birth-time accuracy or a different ayanamsa setting.

How will my child do in studies? What's their Moon sign?

Enter your child's date, time and place of birth in the Moon-sign finder to get their Rashi (Moon sign) and Nakshatra (birth star). Those connect your child to tradition, but no Moon sign predicts intelligence or exam results. Interests, effort, good teaching and the right support decide how a child does; astrology can at most offer a lens for reflection.

What Nakshatra is my baby, and which letters suit the name?

Enter the baby's date, exact time and place of birth in the Moon-sign finder to find their Nakshatra (birth star) and pada (quarter). Each of the 27 Nakshatras has four padas, and tradition gives each pada its own starting syllable, so the pada decides the letter. Check which naming list your family follows, as regional lists differ.

What is my Moon sign, and how is it different from my Sun sign?

Your Moon sign (Rashi) is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born; your Sun sign is the Sun's sign. The Sun changes sign about once a month, but the Moon moves on every 2.25 days or so, so you need your birth time to be sure. Vedic astrology centres on the Moon sign for forecasts, Sade Sati and transits.

What are Nakshatras? What does my birth star say about me?

Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, each covering 13°20′ of the zodiac. Your birth star (Janma Nakshatra) is the one the Moon occupied when you were born. It's used for naming syllables, marriage matching, your Hindu birthday and the start of your Dasha sequence, and tradition gives each star its own symbol, deity and temperament.

Why does my Rashi differ between apps? (Ayanamsa)

Apps usually disagree for one of four reasons: one uses the Western tropical zodiac, they use different ayanamsas (the sidereal offset, about 24°14′ for Lahiri in November 2026), one shows your Sun sign rather than your Moon sign, or the birth time or timezone was entered differently. ChiChakra uses the Lahiri ayanamsa throughout.

Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology? Which one is "real"?

Both are real; they measure from different starting points. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons and the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the fixed stars. The gap between them, called the ayanamsa, is about 24°14′ in November 2026, so your Vedic sign is usually one sign earlier than your Western one.
